Nagios-Based Network Monitoring, With Scalability, DB Enhancements

Opsview is an open source network monitoring platform based on Nagios. The vendor describes Opsview as an integrated set of extensions for Nagios; including scalability enhancements (support for distributed nodes and centralized data collection), a Web framework (Catalyst Web Framework), and data warehousing (MySQL). Opsview development was done in Perl.

A central Linux or Solaris server (a VMware Virtual Appliance is also available) receives monitoring data from deployed O/S Agents (with available agents including Windows, Linux, Mac OS X, and multiple UNIX flavors) as well as SNMP MIB-II compliant devies (the vendor notes the availability of monitoring plugins for multiple manufacturers, including Alcatel, 3Com, Cisco, Lucent, Juniper, NetApp, Nortel, and more). Supported services for network monitoring include DNS, FTP, HTTP, LDAP, NDP, POP3, SNMP, SMTP, SSH and more.

To the core Nagios product Opsview adds support for a distributed architecture (with support for load balancing, centralized configuration, and slave clustering), data warehousing (reporting of historical performance and event data), and access to collected data via Web services. Opsview is a free download; the vendor provides fee-based support services.

Other features include support for SNMP polling and trap processing; trend analysis tools; a notification API with support for E-mail, SMS, and pager notifications; and integrated reporting tools with graphing capabilities.

New in the latest Opsview release is an update of the monitoring engine to be based on Nagios 3, data warehouse and performance enhancements, and a new performance graphing framework.

Opsview is available now. Contact Opsera for further information.
