So you want to run windows programs on Linux?

It seems to be a big sticking point for windows users that they can't run their windows programs on Linux. They say they would use Linux if only they could run such and such windows program.

Sounds to me like they wish to have their cake and eat it too.

My point of view in this matter is quite simple. If you wish to run windows programs then use windows. If you wish to run Linux and windows programs then either use an emulator, wine (Wine Is Not an Emulator) or a virtual machine. If none of those solutions are suitable then stop thinking about using Linux. Stop complaining that you will use Linux if only it could run this program. Either use the operating system the program was designed for or use an alternative program designed for the operating system you wish to use.

The funny thing to me is. I only hear these sort of complaints when it regards Linux. I never hear them about Mac's. At the most, I hear that people wish to install parallels to run windows and its programs. Whats parallels? It is just a virtual machine. Same as vmware and Virtualbox.

If you absolutely positively must use a windows program and you have heard that it can run under wine then don't complain that it is too hard or you have to fiddle around with configuration files to get it to work. Don't complain that it doesn't work exactly like it does under windows. What you are trying to do is not normal. You are knowingly exceeding the design limitations of the program or in other words, you are trying to fit a square peg in a round hole.

For all windows programs that I can think of, and I can think of a lot, there are Linux alternatives. Notice I did not say a Linux version of the windows program. I said a Linux alternative. You cannot expect programs in Linux to be exactly the same as programs in windows. There are many programs that are the same. Firefox, Thunderbird, Open office just to name the three that cover more than ninety percent of company duties.

As much as we would like, we cannot have our cake and eat it too. If you want to use Linux then use Linux and find equivalent alternative means of doing your job. After all, are you not looking at Linux as an alternative to windows? If so then you must look at alternatives for the rest of the programs you wish to use as well. If you don't wish to look at alternatives then stick with windows. Simple!

If you still want to run Linux and run certain windows programs then we will generally want to bend over backwards to help. As long as your attitude is correct. This attitude is "Hey guys I am trying to run this windows program under Linux. I know that I may have problems but with your help I am willing to at least try." The incorrect attitude which is guaranteed to cough up a few flames from the sleeping dragon is "Hey guys, help me run this windows program under Linux, it should run because I need it and I don't want to use xxx Linux program. How can you expect people to use Linux if it can't run this windows program?" That sort of attitude earns you the famous RTFM response.

Just because windows programs do not work on Linux does not mean that it is not ready for the desktop. Under normal usage Linux has no problems and is much better than windows in many ways. Wanting to run a different operating systems programs under Linux can in no way shape or form be considered normal usage.
