It's a big trouble to clean up my Fedora 8 manually. There are too many useless software and files as well as a lot of duplicate folders under different directories (actually most of them are software of different versions), in my operating system after a half year running. I used to consider the maintenance of the Fedora is easier than the Ubuntu, now I think it's a mistake because every distribution of Linux has its own defects, thus resulting in none of those distributions is suitable for desktop use.
There are many many hardworking experts, professionals and volunteers working for those great open source Linux projects, day by day, year by year. However, lots of modules and packages don't have their unified standards in those distributions of Linux, some distributions focus on their security, some other distributions focus on their beautiful appearance. Linux may be unsuitable for desktop use, but it is not too much difficult for those distributions of Linux to achieve most of basic desktop applications, since Linux decided to fight for market against Microsoft in the PC field.
I've tried Ubuntu in first half year last year and had it deleted because of the incompatible between the operating system and the network identification client - Ruijie Supplicant. Then I gave up and tried nothing to solve the problem. In the Fedora 8 I'm using now, a variety of software packages were installed and then removed. Lots of residual folders are in the partition where Fedora is installed in, and the entire free space in this partition is only 1.4GB (total 6.5GB).
Synaptic 0.57.2 was installed right now, and 9 broken packages were detected soon. I plan to clean up my Linux, not only delete those useless files and packages. Reboot my notebook at once. Blessing.
