As I work on Linux with KDE 3.5.8 desktop environment on my laptop, I need to enable sound of stardict and synaptic driver of touchpad.
Depending on which audio driver you used, the best is alsa and most of linuxer use it, after installed stardict-gtk (via debian or ubuntu apt-get, don't install stardict package on KDE, since stardict-gtk is designed to support non-gnome environment), and some dics are installed, download Wyabcd...TTS from http://stardict.sourceforge.net and release it under the path stardict can find, e.g. /usr/share/Wyabcd... .Then, if you use alsa for your default sound system, change the option Dictionary->Sound->Command for playing wav files to aplay, and the following path of TTS. like following:
If you are luck, you needn't configure your touchpad and it works perfectly since laptop-mode deamon is started with ubuntu automaticly.
Before I discover this secret, acturally, I always turn off redundant services or deamons to speed up computer initialization speed, consequently, you can enable laptop-mode via typing rcconf -now or enable share memory option in your /etc/X11/Xorg.conf file, sample can be found by google "enable touchpad linux".
